´Back from the dead´ – Fernandinho goes out in a blaze of Man City glory

Fernandinho signed off from Manchester City with a fifth Premier League title under his belt as the club captain declared: It s like we came back from the dead.

From 2-0 down to Aston Villa after goals from Matty Cash and Philippe Coutinho, City roared back in the final 15 minutes and snatched a 3-2 win with a double from Ilkay Gundogan and a fine strike from Rodri.

Brazilian Fernandinho has decided his time is up at City, after nine successful years in which he established himself among the best defensive midfielders in the history of the Premier League.

At the age of 37, the skipper played the first half of Sunday s game before a tactical switch saw Oleksandr Zinchenko take his place after the break.

That was a shrewd move as the younger legs of Zinche…

Same coach, different players – Mourinho blames Spurs squad for throwing away more points

Jose Mourinho has put Tottenham s inability to hold onto leads down to individual mistakes made by his players, rather than his own managerial ability.

Harry Kane s quickfire double put Spurs 2-1 ahead at half-time in Sunday s Premier League clash with Newcastle United after Joelinton had opened the scoring.

That is how the game remained until five minutes from time when Arsenal loanee Joe Willock fired in an equaliser, just 52 seconds after Kane hit the post at the other end.

Spurs have now failed to win six Premier League games this season in which they have led at the interval – the most of any side – as they missed out on a place in the top four, but Mourinho insists his players only have themselves to blame for their latest setback.

I am frust…

Cavani to stay? Solskjaer talks up next season for Man Utd striker after latest goal

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer talked up the importance of Manchester United getting the best out of Edinson Cavani next season in a possible hint over the striker s future.

Cavani came off the bench to score United s third as they rallied from a goal down to beat Aston Villa 3-1 on Sunday and prevent Manchester City from being crowned champions.

A defeat would have guaranteed the trophy for Pep Guardiola s side and the Red Devils were losing at half-time thanks to a brilliant strike from Bertrand Traore.

However, a Bruno Fernandes penalty and a Mason Greenwood finish turned the game on its head in the second half before Cavani nodded home his eighth goal in seven games.

Cavani also became the third United player to score five Premier League goals in a single seaso…

Monza 1-0 Juventus: Bianconeri beaten in new blow for Allegri as Di Maria sees red

Angel Di Maria saw red as struggling Juventus fell to a 1-0 defeat at Monza in Serie A, with substitute Christian Gytkjaer scoring a 74th-minute winner.

With head coach Massimiliano Allegri not on the bench through suspension, the Bianconeri put in a poor display as Di Maria was sent off for an elbow on Armando Izzo before half-time.

The visitors  sloppy performance was punished 16 minutes from time as Gytkjaer slammed home from a Patrick Ciurria’s cross.

A first league defeat of the season for Allegri’s men means they lose more ground on Serie A’s early pace-setters, adding to the scrutiny of the coach.

Monza started brightly with Nicolo Rovella, on loan from Juventus, flashing a volley wide of the left post.

Izzo missed a great chance to…

Tuchel wants Chelsea players to be brave and go for the kill against Real Madrid

Thomas Tuchel insists Chelsea will not sit back on their away-goal advantage against Real Madrid as it is in the club s DNA to try to win every match.

Christian Pulisic scored a crucial goal for Chelsea in last week s Champions League semi-final first leg before Karim Benzema levelled up the tie at 1-1 through Madrid s only shot on target.

The onus is on Madrid to score an away goal of their own in Wednesday s return match at Stamford Bridge, but Tuchel does not intend to set his side out to protect their narrow lead.

For me, the challenge is to forget the result in two-legged games and go on and start anew at 0-0, he said at Tuesday s pre-match news conference.

We will prepare to win the match, nothing else. I don t know any other way to prepare othe…

De Bruyne ranks comeback title triumph among most special moments

Kevin De Bruyne ranks his sixth Premier League title triumph as one of his most special, having fought back from injury to help Manchester City make history.

City became the first team to win four English top-flight titles in a row on Sunday, with Phil Foden scoring twice and Rodri also on target in a 3-1 final-day win over West Ham.

That result ensured they edged out Arsenal by two points at the summit, despite the Gunners fighting back from 1-0 down to beat Everton 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium.

De Bruyne finished with four goals and 10 assists in just 18 Premier League appearances in 2023-24, having suffered a hamstring injury against Burnley on the opening matchday that kept him out until January.

Speaking to Sky Sports in the aftermath of City s trophy…

Figo: European Premier League would destroy football

Luis Figo has called on everyone in football to oppose a potential European Premier League, saying the competition would destroy football as we know it .

A Sky News report on Tuesday claimed Liverpool and Manchester United were among clubs in England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain to hold talks over a breakaway competition.

Wall Street bank JP Morgan is said to have prepared a $6billion (£4.6bn/€5.1bn) funding package, while FIFA was reported to have given its support to the proposals.

The alleged plan follows failed attempts from the same two elite Premier League clubs to push through Project Big Picture, which would have secured increased voting rights on matters in England for big six clubs.

As with Project Big Picture, though, the mooted Europea…

Meulensteen backs Slot success at Liverpool as Klopp comparisons evident

Liverpool will not see many differences between Jurgen Klopp and incoming manager Arne Slot, though the Dutchman must learn to cope with the added pressure at Anfield.

That was the message from Australia coach and former Manchester United assistant Rene Meulensteen, who expects fellow countryman Slot to succeed on Merseyside.

Slot leaves the Netherlands after three highly successful seasons with Feyenoord, during which he led them to the league title in 2023 and was named Eredivisie Manager of the Year on two occasions.

That record has Meulensteen expecting further success for the former Feyenoord boss.

Meulensteen, speaking on behalf of William Hill Vegas, told Stats Perform: There was a lot of speculation about different names being touted with [Xabi] A…

I think I would ve been the best batsman in the world if I played cricket.

Christian Vieri is regarded as one of the greatest strikers to have played football.

Once the most expensive player in the world, the former Italy international won titles with Juventus, Inter, Lazio and Torino, while he claimed numerous individual honours – the Pichichi Trophy and Serie A Footballer of the Year to go with his FIFA 100 selection and other awards.
